If you're racing Life Time Big Sugar Gravel on Saturday, October 17, 2026, the race starts and finishes in downtown Bentonville, which means where you sleep the night before is a bigger decision than usual. You want a short trip to the start line, a place to prep a bike that's about to go through water crossings, and somewhere quiet enough that a 5 AM alarm doesn't feel like a punishment. Here's the rundown, and why a lot of gravel racers end up at a house like ours.
The week, not just the day
Big Sugar is the finale of the Life Time Big Sugar Classic, which runs October 11 through 17 and has turned into Bentonville's biggest cycling week of the year. The same week brings the Little Sugar MTB race, the OZ Kids Crit Championship Series, group rides, and community jams downtown. Packet pickup for the gravel race happens Thursday and Friday before race day, so most racers arrive by Thursday at the latest. The course, briefly
Three distances: 100 miles, 50 miles, and 25 miles, all rolling out of downtown Bentonville into the Ozarks of Northwest Arkansas and southern Missouri. The organizers describe canopy-covered gravel along Sugar Creek, bluffs and hollers, rarely maintained roads with loose, rocky gravel, a few pavement sections, and a few water crossings and bridges. Mid-October is peak fall color here, which is either a consolation or a distraction depending on how the climbing is going. Registration was still open as of this writing, but check the official site for current status.
Why racers stay at Oakwood Oasis
- A bike wash station and a tuning area in the garage. Big Sugar's water crossings and rocky gravel will coat your drivetrain in Ozark grit. Rinse it, lube it, and store the bike indoors, not on a hotel balcony.
- Garage storage for the bikes, driveway for the cars. Room for three vehicles total, so a carpool of racers isn't fighting over a hotel lot.
- A full kitchen. Race-morning oatmeal, your own coffee bar, and a real dinner the night before instead of whatever's left at 9 PM downtown.
- Two bedrooms, two bathrooms. King and queen, so two racers get their own rooms and nobody's kit is drying in a shared shower.
- Quiet. Quiet hours are 10 PM to 7 AM, the street is calm, and you're minutes from downtown without being on top of it.
- Gigabit WiFi for uploading the ride and pretending to work Monday.
The honest part: we're a duplex minutes from downtown, not a hotel on the square. Getting to the start line means a short drive or a warm-up spin, not a walk. In exchange you get a garage, a kitchen, and sleep.
